As Christians, specific and concrete actions are needed to demonstrate the reality of one’s claim to faith (James 1). Isaiah 1:10–17 announced that God will no longer recognize the worship his people offer him unless they repent and “seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the cause of the widow” (Isa. 1:10–17). In these actions, the people of Israel were to imitate God himself, “a Father to the fatherless and defender of widows” (Ps. 68:5). One test of our relationship to God is the degree to which we extend aid to the “helpless” in our world—whether they be widows and orphans, immigrants trying to adjust to a new life, impoverished third-world dwellers, the handicapped, the homeless, or minorities.
